Do you need to declutter?

Posted on Monday, January 22, 2018

With 2018 now in full swing and spring just around the corner, you might be thinking about giving your house a thorough spring clean!

It’s always a great thing to do, giving you extra space both in your house and in your mind, but if you’re thinking of selling your home it will give you an even better opportunity to get your house ready for sale.

So, how do you start to tackle your mounds of clutter? Here are our top tips

Preparation is Key

If you’re planning a full scale declutter, then an hour just isn’t going to cut it! Depending on the time you have to spend, prioritise the rooms you want to focus on, either in terms of how much it needs sorting out or the importance to your home. Come prepared too – have your bin bags, cleaning products and boxes ready for some serious organising.

Small wins

Don’t forget that small spaces also need a bit of tidy up. You walk through your hallway everyday, for example, so won’t it (and you!) feel better if it’s free from piles of coats, laundry or toys? It won’t take long to sort and tidy away bits and pieces that have gravitated to common walkways and landings, but you will feel a big sense of accomplishment.

It also gives a fantastic first impression if you’re having viewings.

Decisions, decisions….

The hardest part of decluttering is setting your limits (and other peoples!) when it comes to what stays and what goes. Talk about what you need to throw away and what your limits are – are you ever going to wear that coat again? Do you need to keep all of your books? Are you going to get round to finding a use for those spare cables?

It’s best to consider whether the items you’re thinking about throwing away are likely to be needed in the near future or not. Remember to be firm once you’ve made your decisions and see it through!

You don’t have to just throw all of your unwanted items in the bin. You could see how much you sell your items for on eBay or Facebook marketplace, or you could donate them to a good cause. Charity shops and other organisations may be very grateful to receive clothes, books and homeware.
